Ger Yan exclaimed in surprise. He slightly opened his lips to show two or three white teeth. He hugged Lin Lixuan’s sleeve with an uneasy expression. The padded jacket on Lin Lixuan’s shoulder were pulled down by him. Could this really been done by his brother? He couldn’t be blamed for thinking this way—Ji Qian’s previous actions made it too easy associate him to bad intentions.

Even if the village chief said Ji Qian had an affair with Zhao Qingqing, he would believe it.

Lin Lixuan was also stunned. Zhao Xingde’s unfinished words left too much imagination for others. It made sense they were of one thought considering all the months they’d slept on the same bed. Zhao Liniang was just as stunned when she heard this. She directly thought that Ji Qian had an affair with his cousin-in-law. These people inside the Ji family were a perfect match.

Zhao Xingde unscrewed the cap to his gourd, tilted his head back, and took a sip of the yellow liquid. “…What are you thinking about having that kind of expression…”

Ger Yan said while trembling, “With my brother…”

“It was your brother who caught them…” Zhao Xingde briefly told them what he knew.

It turned out that Ji Qian caught his cousin’s wife Zhao Qingqing, privately meeting with a strange man. Because of his grudge with Ji Ya, he originally planned on ignoring this and having a laugh behind his back. But who knew that Zhao Qingqing would tell the man that a doctor had told Ji Ya he would not be able to continue his bloodline. His cousin’s wife even wanted to steal Old Lady Ji’s private funds. Although that private fund had nothing to do with him and Old Lady Ji’s heart was biased, some money could still be spent on him.

Hearing them say that he couldn’t be considered a man anymore made all the blood rush to his head. Ji Qian was furious. If he didn’t head back and make a fuss, then he wouldn’t be Ji Qian. Ji Qian, in front of everyone, spilled the beans on everything that had happened. Which then turned the Ji family upside down.

The three families inside the Ji residence all had different thoughts. Eldest Ji was busy appeasing Ji Qian and Ji Qian’s wife, Song Qiao’er. The couple didn’t know the whole story. Second Ji’s family Liu Yufeng scolded Zhao Qingqing for being so shameless and ran to the Zhao residence to make a fuss. Meanwhile, Ji Ya couldn’t believe that Zhao Qingqing would betray him like that. He suspected Ji Qian was lying. Third Ji’s family thought this had nothing to do with them. They stood with their heads held high like they were watching a good show. Old Lady Ji, whose position was as high as a mountain’s in the family, was the most angry Her favorite granddaughter-in-law actually wanted to steal from her private funds.

The Ji family were in an uproar. When Zhao Qingqing returned, he secretly heard the movement inside the house. He turned around and ran away. The Ji family waited until the middle of the night and didn’t see Zhao Qingqing come back. Believing what Ji Qian said to be the truth, Old Lady Ji was worried about her private fund. She returned to her room, opened the bottom of the wooden bed, and lifted the two bricks. The eight taels of silver inside were gone…

The loss of silver stirred up the anger inside the Ji family to the extreme. She gathered a group of people to barge to the Zhao residence the next morning to find Zhao Qingqing and clear things up. The Zhao family were not easy to mess with. The so-called thief, the person who had stolen from them, Zhao Qingqing, was gone. Who knew if she’d eloped with the money or was killed by the Ji family. The evil were the ones who did harm…

The two families were just arguing at first, then they started pushing and shoving each other. Song Qiao’er was big and had a rough temper. She rolled her sleeves. Her arms were large, but she was pushed down by Zhao Qingqing’s uncle and fainted. Li Yue’e quickly called the doctor, and after reading her pulse, it was discovered that Song Qiao’er was pregnant.

After listening to the doctor’s diagnosis, the expressions on everyones’ faces in the Ji family were indescribable…

Zhao Xingde sighed and took another sip of wine. “That’s what happened… If Ger Yan has time, you should go back and take a look…”

“They caused such a huge fuss around the new years. The fuss was even brought to me. I’ll need to have a discussion with the neighboring village’s village chief…”

Zhao Xingde gave the Lin family a few more shocks. He held his belt and swaggered to the next house. Ger Yan stood beside the vegetable patch by the edge of the yard. He couldn’t come back to his senses. He wasn’t in the mood to tease Lin Lixuan anymore. He didn’t dare look at Zhao Xingde or Lin Lixuan and kept his head down.

Ger Yan’s shame spread through his entire body, even his hair. Although the affairs of the Ji family had nothing to do with him, they were still his brother, uncle, and aunt. His family’s troubles were like a fire burning him. The reputation of the Ji family was being affected as well, so how could  think of himself?

Zhao Liniang glanced at her son. Lin Lixuan put his hand o n Ger Yan’s shoulder and hugged him in the crook of his arm. “I’ll go back with you later…besides, your sister-in-law is pregnant…that’s a good thing…”

For the Eldest Ji’s family, this was both a blessing and a curse. They kept going round and round, and the final result wasn’t so unacceptable.

When Lin Lixuan took Ger Yan to the Ji residence, they went to the dilapidated rooms of the old Ji residence. There was no trace of anger or embarrassment in them. Ger Yu rushed out to greet them. “Ge, brother-in-law, you’re here!” Ger Yu didn’t understand what had happened. All he knew was that his sister-in-law was pregnant. He’s going to have a little nephew soon. When Song Qiao’er’s family heard she was pregnant, they sent over a lot of prey they’d hunted.

Qiao’Er’s father was good at hunting. When it was new years, they always had rabbit and pheasant meat drying on racks at home. After hearing about their daughter’s good news, they were extremely happy and sent over a bag of dried goods. When Ger Yan and Lin Lixuan arrived, they could smell the fragrant and fresh scent of the cured meat.

When Li Yue’e learned about them coming over, she quickly took a porcelain bowl and poured two glasses of boiled water for them. “Ger Yu, let your older brother and brother-in-law drink some water…”

Li Yue’e was dressed in a coarse cloth. Her half-tied up hair was wrapped in a simple head cloth. She was charming and beautiful when she was young, and that hadn’t changed even now. Fine lines grew on the corner of her eyes, and dark spots had appeared on her cheeks, but she was still very charming. She held her Shuang’er’s hand. “Ger Yan, Mother misunderstood you last time.”

Ji Qian sat on the wooden chair with one leg over the other. The chair had been carved by Eldest Ji himself when he was young. It had fallen apart several times through the over ten years and had been repaired with nails and wooden boards. It was an antique. Ji Qian sat on it, but it seemed like he was lying on a pile of boards instead. He munched o n seeds as he spoke, “It seems Ger Yan knew about this a while ago…and even told Mother. But, Mother, you didn’t tell anyone… If you had spoken up earlier, then Grandmother’s money wouldn’t have been stolen…”

Ji Youcai, who had just come in and heard this, immediately motioned with his hand for his son to quiet down. “Don’t speak so loudly. What if your grandmother hears you…” Old Lady Ji lost her money, but no matter what, it couldn’t be blamed on their family. Although Ji Youcai was stupid, he didn’t want Old Lady Ji’s anger to be directed at Li Yue’e.

What if Old Lady Ji heard this and believed this silly reasoning and really blamed Li Yue’e and Ger Yan?

“Okay, okay, okay, I won’t speak anymore.” Ji Qian stopped talking. Like the other grandchildren in Ji Qian’s generation, Ji Qian also didn’t like Old Lady Ji nor the second or third uncle’s family. He couldn’t wait for the Ji family to separate and live their lives apart. Ji Youcai worked hard in the fields every year. He did most of the work, and his mother, Li Yue’e, did most of the housework in the Ji residence. And yet, their family was the poorest.

Whenever there was something good, it would be sent to the Third Ji’s family. More than half the stuff Song Qiao’er’s family sent over this time was taken away by Old Lady Ji and given to the Third Ji’s family. Ji Qian gritted his teeth and endured it.

His father, Ji Youcai, was a fool. He conscientiously contributed all his savings every year and had no private savings at all. Among the three sons, he was the most filial, but he could never earn Old Lady Ji’s favor. Old Lady Ji’s heart was biased toward her third child, her son Ji Xuan. Old Lady Ji lost the money, which naturally meant the Third Ji’s family also lost money. This was an unfortunate schadenfreude in Ji Qian’s eyes.

Li Yue’e was filled with regret. “If I’d known earlier, I would have taken your words to heart, but I misunderstood you.” She took Ger Yan’s hand and repeated herself.

Lin Lixuan took out the snacks he brought and fed them to Ger Yu. “Be careful as you eat. Don’t choke.”

Ger Yu was wearing a large cotton jacket that didn’t fit well. His body looked round with a small head poking out from the middle. He wobbled like a tumbler with an uncoordinated body. “Mmhmm…”

Ji Qian pouted and reached out to grab some food his brother-in-law brought. He grabbed a piece and placed it in his mouth. It was quite  delicious. He softly hummed a song and narrowed his phoenix eyes, looking unruly and lazy. He felt like the biggest beneficiary of yesterday’s incident. He’d learned that he was impotent and that everyone around him knew and was keeping it from him. Ji Qian was furious, and the next day, they said his wife was pregnant, making him proud. Who dared say that he wasn’t a man anymore? Ji Qian was ecstatic, and he wasn’t so disgusted with Song Qiao’er anymore.

“Mother, you lost a lot. You trusted Second aunt back them and gave him four taels of silver…” Ji Qian remembered the foolish thing his mother and father had done. They tried to pass Ji Ya’s child to him, but they didn’t even know whose child was in that belly.

“Those four taels of silver were from Ger Yan’s…” Ji Qian suddenly glanced at Lin Lixuan and swallowed back the rest of the words.

“Can you speak like that? …After all, we’re one family.” Li Yue’e glared at him angrily. Ji Qian still had the face to speak. If it weren’t for him, would all of this have happened?

Lin Lixuan thoughtfully looked at this instigator of an older brother. If he hadn’t made trouble, Ger Yan wouldn’t have been forced to marry him in the first place He they hadn’t married, then that night wouldn’t have happened—

Then he wouldn’t have necessarily become Lin Lixuan.

Which could be said that all causes had their own effect. But Ji Qian, this person really needed a lesson or else he couldn’t handle it. After a while, he called Ger Yan over and had him speak a few words to Song Qiao’er.
